Badminton is a fun recreational sport played at CVHS  as well as many other schools across the United States. Chartiers Valley 11th grader Jack Barlow plays badminton competitively during gym class and said “Badminton is a fun, intense sport and I enjoy playing it in gym.” CVHS takes badminton very seriously. The school holds both a doubles and singles tournament every year and even has weekly badminton rankings. Badminton is a game that is played with a racket and birdie. This game can be played by yourself for singles or with a teammate for doubles. The objective of the game is to hit the birdie over the net out of a reach of the opposing team while keeping the birdie within the playing area. The original game known as battledore originated almost 2000 years ago. In the 17th century battledore was played as a pastime by members of the upper class of England and many other European countries. In March of 1898 the first Open Tournament was held. In 1934 the International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed. The original members included England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand, and France. The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup in 1948. Since then other tournaments have been established such as the World Championships. Badminton first became an Olympic sport during the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain. The sport consisted of both singles and doubles events. Mixed doubles was introduced during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games and is the only mixed doubles events in all of the Olympic sports.
