Red Devils rally in final minute -- as Stars did a season ago

Bedford North Lawrence got the best of visiting Jeffersonville by way of a game-winning drive in Week 3 of last season. This year, the Red Devils returned the favor.

Senior running back Jordan Barnett capped a six-play, 80-yard drive via an eight-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds remaining Friday night, and the Red Devils’ ensuing extra point earned Jeffersonville (2-1, 2-0 Hoosier Hills Conference) an eventual 21-20 win over the Stars.

BNL (2-1, 0-1) had a chance in the waning moments, as a Jeffersonville facemask advanced the Stars into Red Devils’ territory before several out-route completions set up kicker Esteban Flores with a 39-yard field goal try, a makeable attempt for the junior. Flores’ kick was short, however, sealing the win for Jeffersonville.

“I had goosebumps when we scored on that last drive,” Jeffersonville head coach Alfonzo Browning said. “As a player, this is the type of situation I live for. As a coach, we want to teach these kids – that’s what you play the game for, for moments like this, games like this. It’s exciting.”

Barnett led the way for the Red Devils with 153 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Junior running back Kameron Fuller had 129 total yards and a score through the air. The duo marched the Red Devils downfield on the hosts’ game-winning drive via runs of 42 and 17 yards, respectively, before four straight rushes resulted in a Jeffersonville lead. The drive spanned just 1:29 after BNL took the lead with 2:13 left.

Senior quarterback Cameron Northern completed 10 of his 19 attempts for 126 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Sophomore receiver D’Andre Rutherford caught four passes for 86 yards.

“I know my bread and butter right now,” Browning said. “Right now, it’s with Barnett and Fuller. Those young receivers are coming along. Rutherford showed it tonight. We’re going to keep playing to our strength, and eventually we’ll be able to balance it out a little bit when it counts the most.”

Sophomore quarterback McCall Ray was impressive for the Stars, completing 11 of his 18 attempts for 202 yards while adding a 15-yard touchdown run. Austin Jovanovich powered the Stars’ ground game with 57 yards on 11 carries for two touchdowns. He added four catches for 30 yards.

It was a defensive showing early, as both teams traded turnovers. The Stars drove 57 yards in 10 plays to set up shop at the Jeffersonville one-yard line on its first drive before senior Joe Jackson coughed it up. Senior lineman T.J. Love recovered the fumble for the Red Devils. On Jeffersonville’s ensuing drive, Jackson got a bit of revenge as he picked off Northern inside his own five-yard line.

The Stars were unable to take advantage of the Jeffersonville turnover, though, as the Red Devils capped a 79-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown from Northern to Fuller to open scoring. BNL then responded with a 64-yard drive — aided by Jeffersonville penalties — that ended with a three-yard touchdown run by Jovanovich.

Jovanovich added another touchdown run early in the third quarter, a 10-yard plunge up the middle to give the Stars their first lead at 13-7 after the failed extra point. Barnett, who carried the ball eight times for 52 yards in the first half, answered with a two-yard run, and the Red Devils’ successful extra point made the difference at 14-13. Barnett had 96 yards and both his touchdown runs come in the second half, including the eventual game-winner after Ray’s 15-yard touchdown gave the lead back to the Stars late.

Next up, Jeffersonville welcomes Madison. The Cubs (1-2, 0-1) dropped a 51-14 decision to Floyd Central Friday night. BNL moves on to a meeting with New Albany (2-1, 1-0), a 42-7 winner over Jennings County, next Friday.
