Declan Costello’s RBI single scored Anthony Thompson in the top of the eighth inning as Beacon edged host John Jay High School, 1-0, in baseball on Wednesday.
Thompson led off with a single and was bunted to second by Brendon Malouf. Costello, facing a 1-and-2 count, lined a single to centerfield off a fastball.
“Declan was clutch,” Bulldogs coach Bob Atwell said of Costello, who went 2 for 4. “Even with two strikes, he was just looking for a good pitch to hit. He got one over the plate and drove it up the middle.”
Iona-bound starter Jason Antalek allowed six hits and struck out four in six innings, though he got a no-decision for Beacon. He demonstrated good command of his curveball and recorded several first-pitch outs with his changeup, Atwell said. Malouf earned the win, striking out two in two scoreless innings of relief.
The pitching performance was aided by Lenny Torres’ fielding gem in the sixth inning. John Jay had a runner on second and hit what would have been the go-ahead RBI single to right. But Torres quickly fielded the ball and fired a strong, one-hop throw to catcher Matthew Bozsic in time to nab the runner at home.
“It was an amazing throw!” Atwell said excitedly of his sophomore right fielder.
Trent Valentine struck out nine in 6 ⅓ scoreless innings in a no-decision for John Jay. Antonio Pragana was 2 for 4 and Steven Shoen went 2 for 3 for the Patriots.
Beacon faces Spackenkill at 7 p.m. Friday at Dutchess Stadium.
