Nick Mongelli spun a gem Tuesday.

The Marlboro High School baseball team’s senior pitcher mixed his fastball with curveball, and sprinkled in his changeup to keep the New Paltz hitters off balance.

It all came together for him, as the visiting Iron Dukes won, 3-0. It marked the Huguenots’ first loss of the season.

“He’s good,” New Paltz coach Sam Phelps said of Mongelli, who tossed a complete game four-hitter and struck out seven. “When you can throw a curveball and mix it in with a live fastball and a changeup, you’re going to be successful.”

Mongelli was just as efficient with the bat, hitting a double and knocking in a run. Teammate Cole Nicolis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Jack Rusk brought home a run with an RBI single.

Timely hitting on Marlboro’s part, Phelps said, made the difference in the game.

“Marlboro was able to win because they got clutch hits with runners in scoring position and we didn’t,” Phelps said.

Pitcher Matt Barbieri started for New Paltz. He worked six innings and let up six hits with two strikeouts.

“I thought he pitched well. He had command of his off-speed pitches,” Phelps said. “He missed location with a couple pitches and (the Iron Dukes) hit the ball well when we made mistakes.”

New Paltz (10-1) hosts Highland Wednesday while Marlboro visits Franklin D. Roosevelt Friday.
