I’ll be heading to Arlington High in the morning to catch two of the three regional finals featuring Section 1 champs. John Jay and North Salem will be playing there, while Ketcham is heading up to Section 4 territory. I’ve spoken to some friends and reporters from around the state to get a feel for the opponents of the Section 1 teams. Here’s a few quick thoughts on each game.
- Ketcham’s opponent is Section 4 champion Corning, which is coming off of a 3-0 win over Section 9’s Kingston in the regional semis on Thursday. The Hawks used St. Bonaventure-bound senior Danny Madden in that game and he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but came out after giving up a hit and eight walks. It sounds like they may use a combination of pitchers against Ketcham after using Madden and Nate Gorges on Thursday. The Indians will likely start junior righty Ryan Murphy, who was huge for them throughout the playoffs.
- John Jay will see Wallkill, which didn’t get over .500 until the Section 9 championship game. The Panthers got hot at the right time and have a shutdown pitcher in senior Anthony Pacifico who will be ready to go with a full week’s rest. He has a 1.04 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched this season. The Indians will counter with sophomore Ryan Bryggman, who has stepped up throughout this run. And no doubt, Justin Drpich, who hasn’t pitched in a week and a half, will be ready for extended relief.
- As for North Salem, the Tigers will matchup with Section 8 champ East Rockaway, which defeated Section 11’s Southold with a 3-0 win to get here. Senior Ryan Kelly threw a one-hitter in that one and should be unavailable. Look for senior Mike DelGais or junior Chris Deptulski to get the ball against North Salem. The Tigers were planning to give the ball to their senior ace, Danny Capra, who whiffed 13 and allowed just two hits in the Section 1 final against Tuckahoe. But Capra got hit by a pitch in the throwing elbow in Thursday’s blowout win in the regional semis, so his status is up in the air. If he can’t go, it’ll be junior J.B. Healy, who threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the sectional semis against Solomon Schechter.
