SMYRNA – The objective was clear for Smyrna sophomore Greg Baum.

Trailing 27-26 in a Henlopen Conference showdown with Southern Division leader Milford, Baum’s pin of Chase Darling at 120 pounds proved to be the winning point as the Northern Division-leading Eagles held off the Buccaneers 32-30 Saturday night, improving to 8-0 on the season.

“Coach [Kurt] Howell told me I had to get some points for us,” said Baum. “I knew it was pin or nothing, so I just had to go out there, wrestle to my potential and get a pin. That’s what I did.”

“Greg knew we needed more than three points there,” Howell admitted. “We were thin in our lineup and we were looking for ways to get points and save points and we survived. I’m proud of our guys for pushing through.”

Milford (6-1) took a brief 9-8 lead after Chase Taylor defeated Dakota Kerr in a 5-1 decision at 152 pounds, but Smyrna responded with pins from Kalen Wilson and Tony Wuest at 160 and 182 pounds sandwiched around a 7-2 decision by Larsen Wilson at 170 pounds to take control with a 23-9 advantage through seven matches.

The Buccaneers rallied to a 27-26 lead behind decisions from Kenneth VanHorst (195) and Dominiyc Hovington (22) and a pin at 106 by Robby Rosser. A forfeit win at 113 pounds by Jordan Passwaters completed the rally, giving Milford their second and final lead of the match.

In a hotly contested first period, Baum and Darling took turns with takedowns, but it was Baum who managed to wrap up Darling with 11 seconds to go in the first period for the crucial pin.

Howell also credited Hunter Moyer for stepping up two weight classes to 195 pounds and heavyweight Terren Carter, who battled through overtime to defeat Bryan Wynes 2-1.

“That match could’ve gone either way,” Howell said. “We didn’t like the looks of it because Milford had the tiebreaker, but Terren hung on at the end and that was a gritty performance from him tonight.”

Baum said the Eagles were in a battle tonight and it should help them improve on their focus going forward.

“We have to work a lot harder,” he said. “There was a lot of action from both teams tonight, but we can’t leave it up to one match or two points. We have to distance ourselves from other teams.”
