Beacon's Grey wins, but an inch short of record at Penn Relays

Beacon High School’s Rayvon Grey.

Rayvon Grey was running a 101-degree fever on Friday.

The only cure for the Beacon High School long jumper was to compete in front of thousands of fans at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday. He won, but came up just short of reaching one of his season goals and making history.

With a mark 25-feet 2 ½ inches, Grey set a personal best in the outdoor long jump and was an inch shy of breaking Bob Beamon’s New York State outdoor long jump record — a goal he said he was out to accomplish at the beginning of the year. Beamon set the state record with a mark of 25-3 ½ in 1965 and later won an Olympic gold medal in the long jump in 1968.

Grey’s leap was also the second-longest in Penn Relays history.

“It was spectacular. I was mighty impressed with him,” Beacon coach Jim Henry said of Grey’s performance. “I’ve seen better from Rayvon on the landing; he didn’t have as much extension. But we both know it’s there. (Beamon’s) record is not broken yet, but it’s in danger.”

Grey beat out Grant Holloway of Chesapeake, Virginia, who finished second.

Henry added that there are several opportunities for Grey to shatter the record throughout the month of May and into June.

Teammate Terrel Davis also competed in the long jump and finished seventh (22-9 3/4). David Adams placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles (54.75).
