Just by looking at the final score, Monday evening’s contest between the visiting Station Camp High and Beech High softball teams could have been confused for a football game.
In conditions suitable for a gridiron battle, the Lady Bucs scored 12 runs in the fourth inning of a 22-11, five-inning victory over the Lady Bison at Veterans Park in a game played through intermittent rain.
Station Camp (4-18 overall, 1-3 in District 9-AAA) pulled within one run (10-9) prior to Beech’s outburst, which consisted of 12 runs on 12 hits and two errors as the Lady Bucs (11-6, 7-0) sent 17 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning.
“(Station Camp) is a good-hitting team,” Beech head coach Monica Braswell said. “They hit balls hard. They kept it close.”
Ten of Beech’s fourth-inning runs came with two outs, including sophomore Kennedy McCurry’s second home run of the year (a two-run blast that kept rising as it cleared the leftfield fence).
“I was just hoping for a base hit,” said McCurry, who was also the winning pitcher.
McCurry and sophomore Mackenzie Williams drove in five runs each, while freshman Carly Sperlich knocked in four, including a three-run home run in the first inning.
Senior Chasity Wheeley led the Lady Bison offensively, with three hits, a walk and three runs batted in. Freshman Gabriella Sarabia and senior Taylor Gaines drove in two runs each.
“You’re not going to beat anybody – especially (Beech) – when you give up 18 hits and eight errors,” Station Camp head coach Ken Crook said. “We know we have a pretty decent-hitting team, but we just don’t have the pitching right now to stop anybody.”
