An Internet voting campaign to send a Bolivar senior to the NCAA Final Four for a basketball shooting contest ended this week with a loss.
Aleena DeRossett was one of 16 contestants in an online voting competition to appear in the girls 3-point shooting contest at the American Family Insurance High School Slam Dunk and 3-point Championships.
The day after she hit five 3-pointers in a 61-36 playoff win over Nevada, DeRossett suffered a head-to-head loss to Sam Caruth of Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas, Nevada) as voting closed at noon Wednesday. Caruth got 50.4 percent of the overall vote, while DeRossett had 49.6 percent.
The winner of the bracket earns the title of being an American Family Insurance “Fearless Dreamer.” According to contest organizers, more than 220,000 votes were cast in the first three rounds of voting.
The winner will be invited to compete in the 3-point contest Sunday, April 3 in Houston, Texas. Basketball fans can check out the contest by going to http://highschoolslam.com/womens/3pt. DeRossett was selected for the contest by submitting a video on YouTube. She advanced to the semifinals with 68.55 percent of the online votes in a head-to-head matchup with Isabelle Spruit of Mesquite High School (Gilbert, Arizona).
DeRossett is a 5-foot-6 guard who makes 48 percent of her 3-pointers and averages 8.2 points per game. Meanwhile, coach Darin Archer’s Liberators play Friday at 6 p.m. in the Class 4 District 13 district championship game at Clinton High School.
The American Family “Fearless Dreamers” contest winners will join a field of entrants that has already been determined.
