CHARLOTTE –In a close Interstate Eight contest, Charlotte handed Pennfield a narrow loss by a score of 63-59.
The Panthers trailed most of the way through the game, but cut the deficit to two in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, turnovers cost Pennfield (3-3, 1-2) down the stretch, and they couldn’t catch the Orioles.
“We had a chance to win,” Pennfield coach Steve Grimes said. “We turned the ball over more than we have all year long.”
Charlotte head coach Steve Ernst resigned Monday amid controversy, and rumors had swirled before the game that the Oriole players may conduct some sort of protest in support of the former coach.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the game was played as scheduled.
“We didn’t know what was going to happen there, but their fans came out and cheered and were real positive,” said Grimes.
For Pennfield statistically, Steffen Kinne scored 21 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. Ron Jamierson added eight points and eight rebounds for the Panthers, and Grant Petersen chipped in with seven points, seven assists, and four rebounds.
Also for the Panthers, Fran Jamierson contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Dominique Gibson had nine points.
“I was a little disappointed in the way we turned the ball over tonight,” said Grimes. “But we’ve got them coming back to our place.”
