Just a few years removed from a rebuilding process in which Nanuet did not to participate in the Section 1 playoffs, the Golden Knights are enjoying a resurgence. They’ve moved into the top 10 in Class A thanks to an 8-4-1 overall record, and last week provided more encouraging signs.
It was a short week for most teams due to Rosh Hashanah, but Nanuet made the most of its two games. First, the Knights tied defending Class A champ Pearl River — a result that few saw coming based on their recent history. It was the first time they had played the Pirates and not lost since 2008. Nanuet followed that up with a 3-2 comeback win against another league rival in Nyack.
In both games, junior Matt Wain played a critical role. That’s why he’s the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.
Against the Pearl River, Wain found Joe Saxton for the assist on Nanuet’s lone goal to ensure the tie. And against the Indians, Wain scored two of the Knights’ three goals, including the equalizer just before halftime, which coach Nicholas Patrikis said “shifted momentum our way.”
“Matt brings a tremendous amount of energy and flair to each match, which always gives the team a boost,” Patrikis said. “His second goal in the Nyack game, an absolute seed from the top-left of the 18 to the right-side netting, was especially uplifting.”
Others who were considered this week included Riverside’s Esad Mackic, Brewster’s Hugo Guerra, Hen Hud’s David Perez, North Salem’s Mike Selzer, Hastings’ Diego Rodriguez, North Rockland’s T.J. Piscopiello, Pleasantville’s Liam Perrine, Ossining’s Miguel Marra, Gorton’s John Beltran, Harrison’s Rintaro Ishiguro, Eastchester’s Luca Fava, John Jay’s Matt Hegarty and Mahopac’s George Weiss.
