One of the hottest teams in Section 1 at the moment is Tappan Zee, which has been soaring since its overtime win against Pearl River last Saturday.
Perhaps the biggest question for the Dutchmen entering the season was who would carry the offensive burden, but they’ve spread the ball around nicely and displayed a balanced attack. There is one player, though, who has attracted the most attention from opposing defenses and still found a way to be TZ’s most productive scorer.
Sophomore Jorge Umana decided to leave the U.S. Academy system this fall and join his classmates, and he seems to get better with each passing week. The last seven days have been his most fruitful, which helped the Dutchmen follow the big win over Pearl River with a 3-0 week.
Umana began the week with two goals in a win over Yonkers, but his most valuable contributions came on Wednesday against Nyack. He scored during regulation before the game headed to overtime, where he showed his ability to distribute by finding Thomas Shalvey for the game-winning assist. Two days later in a win against Nanuet, Umana also had a goal and an assist.
He finished the week with four goals and two assists in the three wins, earning recognition as the latest #lohudsoccer Player of the Week.
“Jorge’s impact since returning from the Academy program goes beyond the impressive statistics he has posted in his sophomore season,” coach Jon Jacobs said. “He is a unique player who makes players around him better.”
Others who were considered this week included Lakeland’s Arben Hoxhaj, Rye’s Sean Traynor, New Rochelle’s Felipe Tobin, Horace Greeley’s Jack Cohen, Harrison’s Gabe Pereira, Suffern’s Paul Prenaj, Blind Brook’s Oliver Kleban, Pleasantville’s Jonathan Kyriakidis, Hackley’s Sam Rinzler, Eastchester’s Luca Fava and Mamaroneck’s Alex Alma.
