MURFREESBORO — Brentwood powered past Hardin Valley on Thursday afternoon, strolling to its 20th Class AAA volleyball state championship game with a 3-0 win.
Twenty-three minutes later, Goodpasture joined the Lady Bruins in the championships, albeit in the Class A title game.
The two volleyball powerhouses are Middle Tennessee’s lone representatives in Friday’s championships at Middle Tennessee State’s Murphy Center.
Goodpasture (31-8) plays South Greene (41-3) at noon in a rematch of last year’s Class A championship. Brentwood (50-4) faces Farragut (46-5) at 3 p.m. in a rematch of the past two Class AAA title games.
Goodpasture is playing for its fifth consecutive state title — fourth straight in Class A. The Lady Cougars won the 2012 Class AA title. Only Brentwood (1998-2002) and defunct Chattanooga Kirkman (1976-80) have ever won five straight volleyball championships.
“I know everyone wants to talk about streaks and consecutives and stats and stuff,” Goodpasture coach Lynn Dearing said. “We just want to do what’s best for this team.
“If this means we tie another record, that’s great. We’ve already got enough pressure on ourselves. We can’t put that pressure on ourselves.”
Goodpasture’s postseason run comes despite graduating four starters from a year ago. The Nashville private school, which advanced to the final with a 3-1 win over Concord Christian, is moving to Division II-A next school year.
Goodpasture senior Jordan Jones will wrap up her high school career with a shot at a fourth championship ring. She led Goodpasture with 15 kills and 10 blocks against Concord Christian.
“This is so amazing,” Jones said. “We proved we could do it. We’ve worked so hard. We lost a lot of seniors (last year), but we came back.”
Like Goodpasture, Brentwood has also been on a streak. The Lady Bruins have won the past three Class AAA state titles.
Brentwood, which is ranked 23rd in the country by MaxPreps, has won a state-record 11 volleyball titles with eight runner-up finishes. Eleven of the state championship appearances have come since 2000.
“We’re going to just go out there and play our game and focus on winning state,” said Brentwood junior Garrett Joiner, a Virginia commitment who had nine kills against Hardin Valley.
Brentwood defeated Farragut 3-0 on Wednesday in their only meeting this season.
“This has been our goal,” Brentwood coach Barbara Campbell said. “The seniors want it their senior year. They don’t want (the streak) to end with them.”
