Defending state champion Brentwood is two strokes back of first-place Knoxville Halls entering Wednesday’s final round of the TSSAA Class AAA State Tournament, which is being played at Manchester’s WillowBrook Golf Club.
Brentwood sophomore Trenton Johnson leads the field after shooting a 4-under 68 in Tuesday’s opening round, one stroke better than Knoxville Halls’ Alex Hodge.
Tullahoma is eight strokes back in fourth place, and Wilson Central is tied for fifth place, 23 strokes off the pace.
Beech’s Michael Barnard and Warren County’s Bracton Womack are tied for third place after posting scores of 70, and Hendersonville’s Bryce Lewis is in a three-way tie for seventh place after shooting 72. Barnard and Lewis are Middle Tennessee State commitments.
On the girls side, Clarksville leads the team tournament by three strokes.
The Lady Wildcats — the 2011 and 2012 state champion — posted a 151 total and lead Knoxville Halls by three strokes.
Coffee County (157) and Brentwood (160) are in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Brighton’s Aubree Jones — a Mississippi State commitment who was the 2013 and 2014 individual state champion and 2015 state runner-up — leads the girls field after shooting a 2-under-par 70.
Jones leads Clarksville’s Mariah Smith, a Tennessee commitment, by one stroke.
Defending champion Jayna Choi of Houston is tied for fourth place after shooting 73.
Franklin County’s Malia Stovall, another Tennessee commitment, is also tied for fourth. Rossview’s Caroline Caudill (74) and Catherine Caudill (75) are in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
