BRONXVILLE – Earning career win No. 400 wasn’t easy for Bronxville head coach Don Cupertino, especially with his team going up against Zoe Maxwell and Irvington.
The game came down to the wire. In the 78th minute, tied at three, Alex Doukas dribbled the ball into the box and blasted it past the keeper for her third goal of the game to give Bronxville the lead.
Immediately after that goal, Irvington’s Maxwell, who had all of her team’s goals, dribbled past three defenders and made a bid to tie the score, but just missed the net off the right post.
Bronxville would hang on for the 4-3 win and Cupertino’s milestone.
The Broncos celebrated the victory by giving their coach a Gatorade bath.
“We’re really happy to get this win for coach, it showed a lot of heart,” Bronxville midfielder Rachael Peacock said. “We didn’t play our best game but we really started working together better in the second half.”
“It’s pretty cool; that’s a lot of wins. I guess I’ve just been here a long time,” Cupertino said.
The coach didn’t want too much credit for his success.
“It’s all about my players, they’re the ones who are winning games, I just place them out on the field,” Cupertino said “Some of these girls have been with me for a lot of wins. Mason Warble started on the team as an eighth-grader, so she gets credit for at least 100 of them.”
With several talented young players like eighth-grader Doukas, Cupertino is not done winning games yet.
“Our young players have been really terrific this year, they’ve really stepped up,” Cupertino said.
Player of the game: Doukas scored three goals for the Broncos, including the game-winner. She was an offensive threat every time she touched the ball.
Turning point: Irvington’s Zoe Maxwell had a chance to tie the score in the last minute. She dribbled past most of the Broncos’ defense and had a chance on goal. Bronxville keeper Maddie Coyne angled her off and forced her to take a tough shot that missed the net along the right side.
Stat line: Irvington’s Zoe Maxwell had three goals, and Rebekah Rosman made 10 saves. Bronxville’s Doukas had three goals, Natalie Kister added one for the Broncos, and Maddie Coyne made eight saves.
Quotable: “It was great to pull that win out at the end. Irvington really showed up to play. Zoe Maxwell really tore us apart, she’s a great player,” Cupertino said.
