The number one was just enough for the Dickson County Cougars, who were able to outlast Brentwood 1-0 Tuesday evening to punch their ticket to the District 11-AAA Tournament championship game.
Dickson County’s Brooklin Lee recorded 13 strikeouts in a seven-inning effort to lift the Lady Cougars to the semifinal win and a berth in the Region 6-AAA tourney.
“She’s been doing this for four years now, and is just phenomenal in that circle. She’s experienced, and this isn’t her first rodeo,” said Dickson County coach Shane Buchanan.
Dickson’s lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning. Paige Sensing hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field to score Selena Crafton, who originally reached base on a ground ball single between shortstop and third base.
“I don’t have any complaints about tonight,” said first-year Brentwood coach Erica Powell.
“I feel really proud. We’ve been run-ruled by this team, and they’re ranked in the country. They’re well coached and have great players. For us to be in the game with them, I’m super proud of the kids that we were able to hang with them.”
The tight contest did not surprise Buchanan, whose team had no problems with the Lady Bruins in two regular season contests. In fact, he was expecting a tight contest.
“It’s tournament time. People are urgent and know that they don’t have to be better than you all year,” Buchanan said. “They just need to be better than you one night, and they were awfully close.”
Dickson County awaits the winner of Wednesday’s losers’ bracket finals game between Brentwood and Ravenwood in Thursday’s tourney finals.
“We’ve got to be smarter and more patient,” said Buchanan.
