Booker T. Washington, seeded 18th entering the playoffs, made adjustments in the fourth quarter Thursday night, pressuring 15th-seeded Erath into 33 total turnovers as the Lady Lions upset the Lady Bobcats 49-45 in Class 4A playoff action at Erath.
“We turned up the pressure hard down the stretch after their main ball-handler fouled out,” said BTW head coach Terence Winn, whose squad climbs to 17-7 with the win and advances to meet second-seeded Sumner in the second round. “We were missing a lot of 3s so we closed things down a bit, too. The pressure was the difference late.”
Kadeesha Gay led all scorers with 21 points for Booker T. Washington, while freshman Lacaria Smith added 11 points in the win.
Erath finishes its season at 25-5.
Mt. Carmel 60, Evangel 41: The 31st-seeded Lady Eagles’ season came to a close after the second-seeded Lady Cubs darted out to a 39-16 halftime lead en route to the win at Mt. Carmel.
Tiara Young scored 23 points and Breonna Frierson added nine as Evangel finished its season at 19-13, while Mt. Carmel improves to 25-6 and will face the winner of the Zachary/Landry-Martin game in the second round.
Natchitoches Central 84, Hammond 48: The third-seeded Lady Chiefs easily dispatched the 30th-seeded Lady Tornadoes to advance to the second round.
Jolie Williams (25 points, eight steals), Ladayja McIntosh (18 points, 12 rebounds), Kierra Brimzy (14 points) and NuNu Payton (14 points) all scored in double figures as Natchitoches Central improved to 24-7 and will play 14th-seeded Ponchatoula in the second round.
Loranger 79, Woodlawn 47: The 30th-seeded Lady Knights (11-16) saw their season end with the loss to the third-seeded Lady Wolves (27-3) at Loranger. Loranger advances to the second round, where it will take on 14th-seeded Fair Park.
Carencro 70, Minden 53: The 13th-seeded Lady Bears (18-7) eliminated the 20th-seeded Lady Tiders and advance to play fourth-seeded Edna Karr in the second round.
E.D. White 48, Mansfield 45: The eighth-seeded Lady Cardinals (26-2) squeaked by the 25th-seeded Lady Wolverines (14-14) and will face 24th-seeded Madison in the second round.
North Caddo 74, Sacred Heart 23: The top-seeded and defending state champion Lady Rebels built a 41-8 lead by halftime and coasted into the second round with the win over the 32nd-seeded Lady Trojans at North Caddo.
Destiny Rice led all scorers with 26 points as North Caddo improved to 31-1 and advances to face 17th-seeded Archbishop Hannen in the second round.
Arcadia 68, LaSalle 29: The top-seeded Lady Hornets (28-1) topped the 32nd-seeded Lady Tigers (10-16) to advance to the second round. Arcadia will face 16th-seeded St. Mary.
Plain Dealing 70, East Iberville 42: The 11th-seeded Lady Lions pulled away in the third quarter to beat the 22nd-seeded Lady Tigers (15-11).
Darmesha Noble fired in 19 points to lead Plain Dealing as it improved to 22-7. Teuanna Perry scored 11 points, Hershey Stumon poured in 11, and Draunatika Thomas added 10 for the Lady Lions, who advance to face sixth-seeded Merryville.
Delhi 76, Logansport 32: The 23rd-seeded Lady Tigers’ (13-9) season ended with the loss to the 10th-seeded Lady Bears (24-6).
St. Mary 58, Tensas 39: The 16th-seeded Lady Tigers (19-10) eliminated the 17th-seeded Lady Panthers (20-9) and will face top-seed Arcadia in the second round.
Stanley 56, Oak Hill 37: The seventh-seeded Lady Panthers outscored the 26th-seeded Lady Rams 29-14 in the second half to advance to the second round.
Tykeshia Monroe pumped in 17 points to lead Stanley (19-10), while McKayla Williams dropped in 16 points and Destiney Jones added 11.
Negreet 67, Mt. Hermon 14: The 11th-seeded Lady Indians (20-12) easily advanced past the 22nd-seeded Lady Yellowjackets (6-13).
Converse 66, Glenmora 26: Ninth-seeded Converse (23-12) took care of 24th-seeded Glenmora (3-25) to advance.
Castor 65, Simsboro 25: Tenth-seeded Castor (23-12) grabbed a 27-1 lead after one quarter and advanced with the win over 23rd-seeded Simsboro (6-22).
Pitkin 85, Quitman 39: The eighth-seeded Lady Tigers (20-14) advanced with the win over the 25th-seeded Lady Wolverines (8-19).
Zwolle 54, Hornbeck 52: The 19th-seeded Lady Hawks (8-23) pulled the upset over the 14th-seeded Lady Hornets (15-17) to move to the second round.
Saline 57, Gibsland-Coleman 33: The 10th-seeded Lady Bobcats (27-9) went up 42-10 at halftime and cruised into the second round with the win over the 23rd-seeded Lady Bulldogs (0-21).
