GLASGOW – Caravel knew it had continue its strong play on defense if it wanted to limit Glasgow’s explosive offense heading into their first-round DIAA Division II tournament matchup Friday night.

The seventh-seeded Buccaneers gave up just two plays of 25 yards or more and had three fourth-quarter interceptions to knock off the second-seeded Dragons 21-16 to advance tournament semifinals.

“The kids played well. The coaches were coaching the kids up making adjustments, and the kids executed,” Caravel head coach John Reed said. “It’s been that way all season. Our defense has played unbelievable all year. A lot of credit to them.”

The Buccaneers had interceptions on Glasgow’s first two possessions of the fourth quarter when Nick Jones had an interception with 8:42 left and Brandon Hoeflinger had one with 4:20 left.

Mandela Montgomery had Caravel’s third interception of the fourth quarter, which came 2:52 remaining, and Montgomery said every Caravel defender has the same mindset when the ball is in the air.

“My gameplan was ‘if they throw the ball, it’s coming down with me.’ If I’m not catching it, he’s not catching it. All our [defensive backs] have that mentality,” Montgomery said.

Glasgow made it 21-14 when Michael Credle had an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tavian Hunter with 12.6 seconds left, which was followed by Credle scoring on the two-point conversion to make it 21-16, but the Buccaneers recovered the ensuing onside kick to hold on to the win.

Caravel got off to a fast start when Montgomery connected with Jawain Granger for a 63-yard gain on an option pass on the first play from scrimmage, setting up a Josiah Larkins two-yard touchdown on the next play, and Maverick Jackson hit the extra point to make it 7-0.

“That was important because it put a touchdown on the board on the very next play. We kept building from there, and we kept the momentum up and didn’t let it go,” Montgomery said.

Glasgow took an 8-7 lead on a Credle’s four-yard touchdown run and Tyrique Woodland 2-point conversion with 7:20 left in the second quarter, but the Buccaneers responded with 14 unanswered points to take a 21-8 lead into halftime.

Caravel regained the lead on a Montgomery 14-yard touchdown run with 1:17 left in the second quarter, and the Buccaneers followed that up with a five-yard touchdown connection from Alex Barker to Granger with 10.5 seconds left in the first half.
