* On the floor: Weyer was a double-double machine, averaging 21.6 points and 11.4 rebounds as the Thoroughbreds finished 30-5 and reached the Sweet 16 semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Paul Dunbar. He’s a versatile player who can score in the paint and from 3-point range (61 of 131, 46.6 percent). He was named the Ninth Region Player of the Year by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches.

* Off the floor: Ben Weyer ranks among the top 10 academically in the senior class at Newport Central Catholic and may decide to go into teaching and coaching. Jim Weyer, Ben’s grandfather, was the head coach at Thomas More College from 1960-78. Among his players was Newport Central Catholic head coach Ron Dawn.

* Future: Weyer has signed with Bellarmine University.

* Quotable: “What stands out is the amount of effort and time he puts into it,” Dawn said. “Last summer I don’t know how many times he’d go to the gym at 10:30 at night and be shooting until 12:30.”
