Young players sometimes get confused in the heat of a tight game. It happens. Yet what happened in the Southern California game between Alemany and Garfield was far more difficult to comprehend.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, during Alemany’s 42-12 victory, a third string sophomore member of the Alemany punt team became confused and, somehow, got lost after setting up in punt formation. While he meandered across the field, Garfield players began calling to him to join them … on the Garfield sideline.
“It was bizarre,” Garfield coach Lorenzo Hernandez told the Times. “He was hanging out with our guys.”
That lasted for all of a play, after which the Alemany coaches realized they had competed for a play with 10 on 11. Based n the punishment for the mistake, something tells us the unnamed player won’t be listening to come hither calls from the sidelines again anytime soon. Just ask Alemany head coach James Washington:
“He ran today.”
