Isaac Washington stamped his name into Cape Coral High School football lore Friday night.

The senior running back, a nephew of former prolific Estero High running back Lorenzo Johnson, had a prolific performance of his own, rushing 36 times for a career-best 356 yards and five touchdowns. Cape Coral coach Larry Gary said he would look into it but believed all three categories to be school records.

And the Cape Coral Seahawks needed all of it, as they were facing the swift-scoring offense of Ida Baker.

The Seahawks defeated the Bulldogs 46-36 in a District 6A-10 matchup on homecoming night at Cape Coral’s Dave Warkentin Field. It marked Cape Coral’s first win of the season, as the team improved to 1-4 and 1-1 in the district. The effort included a 55-minute lightning delay, during which Washington caught his breath, having rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries by halftime.

Ida Baker fell to 2-4 and 0-2 in the district.

“They’ve been improving week by week,” Washington said of his offensive line. “They were amazing.”

Washington amazed his coaches and teammates as well. On some runs, he cut back across the field, then sprinted up the field again. On others, he made spin moves.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, with the Seahawks leading 32-29, Washington also put the game out of reach. On fourth down with 6 yards to go at midfield, Gary called for a fake punt.

Washington ran for 28 yards. Three plays later, he punched in his fifth touchdown, on a 4-yard run.

“He does it in practice,” Gary said. “What we see in practice is what we want to see out on the game field. He’s just a good, humble kid.”

Indeed, Washington celebrated his touchdowns by handing the football to an official and then running to the sidelines. He left most of the talking to his mother, Ranada Washington, who graduated from Mariner High in 1998.

“He gets underrated all the time,” Ranada Washington said of her son. “He’s just phenomenal. I was just amazed. Oh my gosh.”

Washington scored touchdowns, in order, on runs of 10, 3, 2, 4 and 22 yards. He also had three runs of 35 yards or longer. He perhaps could have scored even one more touchdown, but he lost a fumble on the goal line.

“It was great to have an NFL player compliment me,” Washington said, referring to Cape Coral High graduate Jaylen Watkins, who watched the game during the Philadelphia Eagles bye week.

Cape Coral withstood a big night from Ida Baker quarterback Toby Noland, who completed 23-of-29 passes for 382 yards and five touchdowns.

Luke Endsley caught 12 passes for 155 yards and three of those scores, including a 33-yard touchdown that gave Ida Baker a 29-25 lead with six minutes and 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Cape Coral answered with a 7-play, 61-yard drive capped by a 2-yard run by Washington for a 32-29 lead remaining in the third quarter. Cape Coral never trailed again.

Washington had some help on offense. Rickey Anderson rushed for 80 yards on nine carries.

“We just found a guy who could have a presence and take the load off Isaac with Rickey,” Gary said.
