Carson Murray leads Collins to victory, ends Bullitt East's perfect record

The Bullitt East High School softball team was storming their way through the season with an undefeated record before they ran into Collins freshman Carson Murray.

Murray almost single-handed led the Titans (14-6) to victory as they ended the Chargers’ perfect season with an 8-7 victory in Shelbyville on Wednesday evening. The freshman threw a complete-game in the circle and drove in four runs on 2-for-4 hitting, adding a double.

Chargers sophomore pitcher Taylor Roby did more than enough to match Murray’s effort, pitching a complete game herself and hitting two home runs at the plate, but it wasn’t enough to overcome late in the game.

The Chargers (16-1) opened the evening with a three-run first inning, and added a insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 6-0. Despite looking like they were well on their way to victory, the Titans staged an impressive comeback.

The Titans were down to their last out in the fifth inning before junior Hannah Renfro walked and her sister Hallie Renfro hit a single to put two on base. Then Cassie Rannells lined a triple down the right field line, scoring the Renfros. Murray then stepped up to the plate and smacked a single to score Rannells and make it 6-3.

After the Chargers went three-up, three-down, the Titans took advantage of some sloppiness from Roby in the circle. Senior catcher Janette Hynes hit a single to lead off the inning and the bases soon became loaded after a pair of hit-by-pitches. Hannah Renfro then drove in a run with an RBI single. Hallie Renfro then singled to drive in a run and Rannells reached base on a fielders choice, scoring a run to tie it at 6-6 before they were brought home on a Murray double to make it 8-6.

The Chargers scored a run in the seventh inning, but the Titans held on to secure the big mid-season victory.

In addition to Murray, Hallie Renfro went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs, Rannells went 1-for-3 with a triple and a pair of RBIs, and Hannah Renfro had a walk, a pinch-hit RBI, and two runs scored for the Titans.

A number of Chargers had good days at the plate, including Roby, who went 3-for-3 with the aforementioned two home runs and three RBIs, Emily Salyer, who had two RBIs on 1-for-4 hitting, and Shelby Maros, who hit a double on 2-for-4 hitting and scored two runs.
