While five players announced their college decisions during the ESPN2 broadcast of the Under Armour All-America Game on Saturday, four-star wide receiver Cavin Ridley took a more low-key approach.
No national TV, no Twitter announcement, no pre-arranged video.
Ridley, from Deerfield Beach High in Florida, surprised news reporters after the game by saying that he had committed to South Carolina on Friday in a phone call with new Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson.
“They were recruiting me since they were at Auburn,” Ridley said, according to The Miami Herald. “They recruit well. They recruit South Florida kids and recruit them the best they can, and I just believe in Coach T-Rob and the things they tell me. I just ran with them. It’s a new staff, and I think everybody in the world would like a new start. I feel like I can go in there and make an impact.”
Ridley’s older brother Calvin plays for Alabama, which was Cavin’s other finalists and according to reports, expected to sign him.
“He’s just going to let me do me,” Ridley said, according to the Herald. “He wants what’s best for me, and just do what I’ve got to do.”
