Believe it or not, the high school football season begins 11 weeks from Friday.
While football might not yet be top of mind, MaxPreps unveiled its Top 25 Preseason Early Contenders this week. There were no Indiana teams listed in the Top 25, though there was one in the next 25.
The team? Defending Class 6A champion Center Grove. The Trojans, No. 19 in the final MaxPreps rankings of 2015, came in at No. 49.
Center Grove, coming off a 14-0 season, will lose several key seniors, including star defensive linemen Jovan Swann (Stanford) and Cameron Tidd (Vanderbilt). But the Trojans will bring back senior-to-be running back Titus McCoy (1,912 rushing yards, 28 TDs), among others.
MaxPreps ranked St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as its No. 1 overall team. California, Florida and Texas accounted for 13 of the top 25 programs.
One name I was surprised to see not listed: Cathedral. The Irish will be breaking in a new quarterback, but bring back several experienced and talented players from a team that finished 8-4 and lost in 37-34 in double overtime to Avon in the regional.
