I was unable to attend this year’s Wilson Cup so Bill Doescher stepped in and wrote up a tournament summary …

Hartsdale – Youth was served at the 45th Wilson Cup on Friday at the Scarsdale Golf Club when the Ivy League tandem of James Nicholas and Chris Troy combined to shoot rounds of 63 and 66, finishing with a 13-under total of 129.

The Winged Foot teammates each player carding 10 birdies. They only had two bogeys in the 36-hole tournament. Troy also registered the team’s only eagle with a chip-in from in back of the green at No. 10 in the morning round.

Their lone bogeys came at Nos. 7 and 14 in the afternoon round.

Nicholas, 19, of Scarsdale, a rising sophomore at Yale, and Troy, 20, of Greenwich, a rising junior at Cornell, won by four strokes over the top Scarsdale team of Brandon Wu, 19, No. 3 on the Stanford golf team, and Peter Friedman, 25, the host club’s 2011 champion, who posted a shot rounds of 65 and 68 finish at 9-under 133.

Wu, a relatively new member at the Scarsdale Golf Club, met Friedman for the first time on the driving range before play began for the morning round. Scarsdale Golf Club head pro Bill Smittle had suggested the two play together in the Wilson.

The team of Patrick Pierson and Tommy Prestia from Hollow Brook placed third with a score of 134.

It was the second prestigious victory in three weeks for Nicholas and Troy. They captured the 80th Anderson Memorial Invitational, a four-ball, match-play event, at Winged Foot on June 12.

Remembering that recent victory, their competitive junior club matches against each other at Winged Foot, and complete knowledge of each other’s game, Nicholas asked Troy, who was playing the course for the first time, to join him for this year’s Wilson only four days ago. It was a smart move by Nicholas, who is studying medicine at Yale. Troy is enrolled in the undergrad business school program at Cornell.

Denver Brown, who with Al Rabil of the Whippoorwill Club won last year’s Wilson, had the shot of the day. He scored a hole-in-one on the fifth, using a 9-iron from 156 yards.

Peter Friedman and Brandon Wu of Scarsdale Golf Club took second place in the Wilson Cup, playin together for the first time in the morning round.
