Christian PoPoola Jr. is off to a terrific start to his junior season with Bishop Gorman. The 6-foot-4 combination guard returned to Bishop Gorman after spending his sophomore season at Lone Peak (UT).
PoPoola has excelled since returning to the Gaels, starring alongside senior Zach Collins and junior Charles O’Bannon to form one of the top trios on the west coast.
PoPoola announced in early December that he will run with the Oakland Soldiers in the 2016 NIKE EYBL. He makes the move from 16U Utah Basketball Club, also sponsored by NIKE.
Prep Circuit’s Ryan Lommen caught up with PoPoola, touching on a variety of topics including his return to Gorman, his pending recruitment and his decision to join the Soldiers.
Ryan Lommen: What played into the decision to move from Lone Peak back to Bishop Gorman?
Christian PoPoola: When I went out to Utah, I still had my little brothers and a lot of my family living in Vegas, so a lot of the decision to move back had to do with keeping close to my family for my last couple years of high school.
RL: How was playing for Utah Basketball Club?
CP: UBC was a great experience for me, not only because it was on the Nike Circut, but also because I got to play with a lot of the kids I played against in my high school season. There was some very good competition in Atlanta and it was the first time I got a chance to play my age group this summer. I had a great time.
RL: What was it like playing in the Jordan Brand Classic for Team Africa?
CP: Playing for Team Africa in the Nike Global Challenge was so fun because I got a chance to meet a lot of kids with similar heritages. I really enjoyed learning some French and learning how to communicate in different ways. I also had fun playing with Jordan Nwora again. We had a great time freshman year and we wanted to make it our mission to win games.
