After the best voting turnout in The Desert Sun’s Friday Night Hero history on Instagram, Coachella Valley junior quarterback Armando Deniz edged out Indio running back David Alvarado by three votes, 1,579 to 1,576. Previously, Desert Mirage’s Jesus Angel held the record with 855 votes a year ago.
Deniz’s win in the voting contest caps off a solid week for the Arabs after they started their 2016 campaign with a 55-35 road victory over Cathedral City. Deniz, playing in his first varsity game, played a major part in the win, completing 21-of-31 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns through the air, to go along with one on the ground.
Alvarado’s success on and off the field was no small feat either, though. The junior rushed for 68 yards, including a 12-yard scoring rush, leading the Rajahs to their first win over a non-Yucca Valley team in three years.
