It didn’t take Columbus East long to take charge.

The Olympians scored two touchdowns in their first four plays from scrimmage and rolled past host New Albany 56-15 Friday night.

Columbus East (4-1, 3-0 Hoosier Hills Conference), No. 5 in Class 5A, won its 71st straight game against a conference opponent, including postseason games.

The Olympians’ dominance was obvious on the stat sheet, finishing with 631 yards of total offense – 477 yards rushing and 154 yards passing.

“They beat us soundly in all phases of the game,” New Albany coach Sean Coultis said. “You can’t point to one play, injuries or the refs. They beat us soundly and deserved to win.”

After New Albany fumbled the ball on their first drive, the Olympians needed just one play to score – a 38-yard run by junior Jamon Hogan.

Hogan, who also scored on an 18-yard run as the Olympians built a 21-0 cushion early on, finished the half with 170 yards on the ground. In the second quarter, Hogan slipped out of the backfield, caught a pass from quarterback Josh Major and raced 59 yards for the score. Hogan didn’t play in the second half.

Hogan’s backfield partner junior Jaedin Miller added TD runs of 7 and 24 yards as the Olympians led 42-0 late in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 2-1) finally scored on a 75-yard pass from Dylan Clark to Davin Alexander with 2:41 left in the second quarter. New Albany trailed 42-7 at the half.

New Albany added another score in the third quarter as Darquan Richardson sprinted 27 yards right up the middle for a touchdown. Luke Kaiser added the two-point conversion.

Richardson, New Albany’s dynamic junior running back, was held to 64 yards on 15 carries.

The Olympians added a late touchdown from Ethan Rogers on a 52-yard run.
