The Desert Christian Conquerors had a big day in the Brawley Tournament, winning a pair of games in pool play of the event.
Desert Christian defeated Yuma 54-48 in the first game thanks to 15 points including two 3-pointers from Ashley Klopfenstein. Kaylee Espinoza added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Wagner had nine points with Katie Schmidt adding eight points.
In the second game, the Conquerors defeated Indio 36-22. Grace Johnson had 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the way for Desert Christian, while Espinoza had seven points.
Desert Christian (5-2) continues pool play in the tournament against Calipatria and Central Union Saturday.
Rancho Mirage 43, Palo Verde 35: In a Wednesday game, the Rattlers raced to a 27-7 halftime lead and coasted to the win in the Brawley tournament.
Rancho Mirage (3-3) was led by Jodi Ingal with 18 points and four steals. Phoenix Chirwa added six points and eight rebounds, while Jahnece Curtis had six points and eight rebounds.
Palm Springs 36, San Gorgonio 35: The Indians won the tight non-league game behind Kaleigh Vargas’ 17 points, nine rebounds and added five assists.
Kelley Libretti scored six points and added three assists for Palm Springs. Tzipporah Page and Madyson Hampton combined for 16 rebounds, eight steals and four blocks.
Palm Springs is 2-3 on the season and play home next Wednesday against Desert Mirage.
Shadow Hills 46, Coachella Valley 45: The Knights earned their first win of the season in dramatic fashion.
Forward Natalia Johnson scored a layup, was fouled and made the free throw with one second to lift the Knights to the win.
Sophomore point guard Dominique Urbina of Shadow Hills lead all scorers with 15 points and added four assists. Melissa Martinez had a strong outing with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Knights.
Shadow Hills (1-2) will play in the Redlands East Valley Tournament Friday.
Desert Hot Springs 71, Orangewood Academy 70: This Golden Eagles moved into the third-place game of the Spartan Classic. Desert Hot Springs was led by Baylee Carter, who scored 27 points, grabbed five rebounds and collected four steals. Darrell Jonson had 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Yucaipa 71, Palm Springs 68: The close loss for the Indians came in the Kiwanis tournament, and the Indians will continue play in that tournament Friday.
Palm Desert 51, Calexico 38: In a Wednesday game, Will Struthers led the Aztecs with 21 points in the non-league victory. Dylan Ulber had 17 points and nine rebounds. Devin Lopez had eight rebounds while Juan DeSantiago had four assists.
Palm Desert is now 3-3.
Indio 67, Fallbrook 64: In the St. Margaret’s tournament, Christian Briceno scored 17 points to lead the Rajahs to the win.
Phillip Thigpen added 13 points and 15 rebounds for Indio, while Jeremiah Brown scored 13 points.
Indio (5-3) will play in the third-place game of the tournament Saturday.
Desert Christian Academy 71, Yucca Valley 43: The Conquerors went on the road and controlled the game almost from the start to record the non-league matchup win.
Cathedral City 61, Sherman Indian 54: In the first round of the Woodcrest Invitational. Kavonte Kinney finishes with 34 points and 14 rebounds for the victorious Lions.
Jordan Wallace added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Lions also saw big defensive efforts from Isaiah Ross and Timothy Miller, who finished with six steals.
Coachella Valley 56, Imperial 52: In a Wednesday game, Eddie Gill had 19 points to lead the Arabs.
Ruben Dominguez had 12 points and Nick Hernandez had 11 points while playing solid defense.
Xavier Prep 6, Desert Mirage 0: The Saints received a shutout from sophomore goalie Emma Feller who had five saves in the victory at Desert Mirage High School.
Xavier had two goals by Ayanna Suarez, and goals by Brooklyn Nunez, Stephana Bello, Acacia Dabareiner and Dalton Kramer.
Xavier is 5-2.
Rancho Mirage 8, Hamilton (Anza) 0: Six different Rattlers scored goals in the easy non-conference victory.
Kenya Cordero and Fernanda Mercado each scored two goals in the first half for Rancho Mirage. They helped build a 5-0 halftime lead. Jaidah Martin (assisted by Katalina Valenzuela) scored the game’s first goal just eight minutes into the contest.
In the second half, the Rattlers saw goals from captain Aaliyah Carter (assist to Briana Luna), Naomi Garcia (assist to Maddisonn Covington) and Jasmin Rendon (assist to Covington).
The Rattlers play Friday in the Linfield Christian Tournament against Ontario Christian.
Palm Desert 2, Beaumont 0: The Aztecs went on the road to gain the non-league victory.
The Aztecs scored in the 32nd minute on a shot from Camryn Beaty about 35 yards from goal.
In the second half, Alyssa Granados floated a corner kick that was headed into the back of the net by Madison Cosgrove in the 52nd minute.
Senior goalkeeper Alexandra Fabela earned the shutout after missing the first 6 matches with an injury.
The Aztecs improve to 4-1-2 and travel to Hawaiian Gardens Saturday for the Best in the West Tournament.
Twentynine Palms 7, West Shores 2: The Wildcats lost at home.
La Quinta 2, Temecula Valley 2: The Blackhawks scored two goals in the second have to rally and tie the homestanding Temecula Valley team.
Andy Teran scored for La Quinta on an assist from Christian Herrera for the first La Quinta goal. Lucas Rosales scored the second goal on an assist from Reed McCrae.
Logan Prescott had three saves in goal for La Quinta, which is now 3-0-2. The Blackhawks will played Desert Hot Springs Monday.
Notre Dame (Riverside) 1, Desert Christian Academy 0: The Conquerors are 0-2 on the young season and will face Crossroads Christian Tuesday.
West Shores 0, Brawley 0: In a home game for West Shore, the Wildcats broke a three-game losing streak by forcing the tie with Brawley.
The Wildcats received solid defense from Gustavo Covarrubias, Guillermo Tellez, Gustavo Meza and Alex Castro. Goalie Jose Dominguez recorded his first clean sheet of the year with six saves.
West Shores travels to San Diego Saturday to play in the Francis Parker tournament.
