NEWARK – One run was all it took for the Conrad School of Science baseball team to claim possibly the biggest win in team history.

Junior catcher Brock Nowell homered in the top of the fourth inning and senior pitcher Michael Awtry, returning to form after Tommy John surgery, made it stand up as the Redskins held off rival Delaware Military Academy 1-0 Tuesday afternoon, clinching the school’s first ever outright Diamond State Conference championship.

“We’ve been in the mix each of the past four years for the conference title,” Conrad head coach Kelley Wilson said. “This is a huge win for our program.”

“Having to sit on the bench and watch the guys lose to DMA last year, I just knew it wasn’t going to happen again,” said Awtry, who went 6 1/3 innings, surrendering just four hits and walking three batters.

Awtry had a rough first three innings, allowing multiple baserunners, but none could get home as he settled in and kept the Seahawk hitters at bay.

“I think I just had too much adrenaline going,” Awtry explained. “Second time through the order, I settled down and started locating fastballs better.”

Nowell had no trouble locating a Matthew Danz fastball with one out in the fourth inning. On the first pitch, Nowell got a hold of it and sent a screaming liner down the right field line that cleared the fence easily for the game’s only run.

Danz was the hard-luck loser for the Seahawks (10-5, 4-2 Diamond State), going the full seven innings, allowing only five hits and the one run.

“First time up, I saw he was coming in hard with the fastballs, so I knew I had to get one,” Nowell said. “On that first pitch, I caught it pretty good and it went out.”

The Redskins (13-2 overall, 7-0 in Diamond State Conference play) held on from there, as Ryan Bradigan came on and struck out the final two batters in the top of the 7th inning to seal the win.

“It’s a great feeling,” Nowell said of clinching a conference championship. “We prepared for this for a week and the results showed – we were better prepared today.”

“The seniors, we’ve always tied with DMA or Archmere for the conference championship,” Awtry added. “Winning the conference has our confidence pretty high right now and we’re just ready to play more baseball.”

Jacob Hudson collected two singles for DMA in the losing effort.
