GREENVILLE – Tatnall had Ashlin DeLucia return to its lineup just in time for its DIAA Volleyball State Tournament opening round match up against visiting A.I. DuPont on Tuesday.
DeLucia’s return allowed the 10th-seeded Hornets to reshuffle its lineup, and that paid off as the had a stronger offense, allowing them to sweep the 23rd-seeded Tigers (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) and advance to the second round.
“We got Ashlin DeLucia back from injury, and we decided to go three swings on our outside. It’s a little bit stronger, so we moved outside, MacKenzie Prettyman, to our right side. She was near perfect on that side for not having playing that side before,” Tatnall head coach John Evans said. “Ashlin and Lindsey Moyer kept hammering from the left side, and we even got a couple of quick attacks from Mia Wilson in the middle.”
The first game was tight throughout before the Hornets scored five of the final six points to earn a 25-21 victory, and they took a 2-0 lead in the match by winning game two 25-17.
Tatnall closed out the match with a 25-23 victory in the third game, setting up a second-round battle against seventh-seeded Smyrna on Saturday at Archmere Academy, and the Hornets feel their strength is their ability to forget about mistakes.
“We come together really nicely as a team. We have a really positive energy on the court,” Moyer said. “Whenever anybody messes up, everyone shakes it off, we move forward and we’re able to carry positive energy. We’re not dwelling on mistakes.”
