The Desert Mirage boy’s soccer team had to play from behind for most of Friday’s contest at Valley Christian, yet still managed to remain unbeaten by scoring a pair of goals late in the second half.
The 2-1 win advances Desert Mirage to the Division 6 semifinal of the California Interscholastic Federation postseason.
Sophomore forward Alex Pimentel was taken down in the box in the 58th minute, and Fred Zaragoza converted on the penalty kick to put the Rams (21-0) on the board, which tied the score at 1.
With about nine minutes remaining, Juan Gutierrez’s deflected shot bounced free and teammate Dante Delgado fired it back into the upper right corner past a diving Valley Christian goalkeeper for what would be the game-winner.
The Rams will play at home on Tuesday against Covina. A win there and the Rams will be in the CIF final, potentially against De Anza League rival Shadow Hills, provided the Knights also win on Tuesday.
In other action, the Rancho Mirage boys’ soccer team fell, 3-2, to Flintridge Prep in overtime.
