Before the annual Battle of the Belt Line between Cedar Hill and DeSoto in Texas, a number of cheerleaders took a knee for both teams. The anthem was played while the teams were in their locker rooms.
When they got to the field, the teams gathered for a pregame prayer.
“It was about justice,” DeSoto wide receiver BJ Hanspard told EJ Holland of 247Sports. “We didn’t want to kneel for the anthem. We wanted to come together as enemies for prayer.”
Led by a player for each team, the prayer included references to the players being a family, a unit and part of “one nation under you, God.”
