DEWITT – The DeWitt girls basketball team took care of their business.
They also got some help, and now are alone atop the CAAC Red standings.
Lilly George, Grace George and Jessah McManus each had nine points as the Class A No. 4-ranked Panthers posted a 48-34 victory over Waverly in a league contest.
The win was the seventh straight for DeWitt, who took sole possession of first in the Red with Haslett falling at home to St. Johns.
The Panthers overcame a slow start to add to their win streak. DeWitt (16-1, 7-1 CAAC Red) didn’t take its first lead until the middle stages of the second quarter and did so by using its defense to create offense.
“(Waverly) came out on fire and I thought really took it to us physically,” DeWitt coach Bill McCullen said. “The Bennett kid was really playing well in the first quarter and then we started to settle in and get some stops. We got our full-court pressure working a little bit and it created some baskets. But it took awhile to get that lead.”
The Panthers went on a 13-0 run in the middle stages of the third quarter to take control.
Maya Bennett had seven points – all in the first quarter – to lead Waverly (10-6. 3-5).
