As the IHSAA’s 50th annual state baseball tournament begins next week, two of the state’s best teams – arch-rivals New Albany and Jeffersonville – would not meet until the championship game of the Class 4-A Floyd Central Sectional on Memorial Day.
The tournament will culminate with the state finals at Victory Field in Indianapolis June 17-18.
Of the local Class 4-A teams, No. 5 Jeffersonville (15-3) would have to beat Seymour and the Jennings County-Floyd Central winner before a possible date with No. 8 New Albany (19-6).
Jeffersonville coach Derek Ellis said the Red Devils won’t be looking ahead.
“We won’t be looking past Seymour,” he said. “That would be a mistake.”
Still, Ellis said he knows the Red Devils will have a tough road.
“It’s not the best draw, when you have to play three (games), instead of two,” he said. “When I saw it, my first thought is what are we going to do with our pitching rotation. But I’ve got a lot of pitching, which is good.”
Floyd Central coach Casey LaDuke said Jeffersonville, New Albany and Bedford are the three favorites. LaDuke said his Highlanders aren’t far behind.
“We’ve competed (in close games) with some of the better teams on our schedule,” he said. “And anything can happen in the sectional. You just never know.”
In the Class 3-A North Harrison Sectional, No. 2-ranked Silver Creek was handed a tough draw, starting with host North Harrison. If the Dragons (23-2) advance, they would face the Charlestown-Corydon winner in the semifinals. The Brownstown-Salem-Scottsburg survivor would represent the top half of the bracket.
In the Class 2-A Clarksville Sectional, No. 3-ranked Providence (19-3) must win three times to win the sectional, starting with a first-round tilt against Henryville. If the Pioneers advance, they would face the Clarksville-Eastern Pekin winner, while Paoli and Crawford County drew byes into the semifinals.
In the four-team Class A West Washington Sectional, Orleans will face Trinity Lutheran, while West Washington will take on Crothersville.
At Class A Lanesville, Borden-New Washington-South Central drew in one half of the draw, while Christian Academy of Indiana and Lanesville will face off in one semifinal.
