When Dunbar players emptied the water cooler on top of coach Sammy Brown following a 41-0 non-district rout of Island Coast, it was a celebration of things returning to normal. At least that’s what the Tigers hope.

Dunbar (4-2) returned to its winning ways after a three-weak absence, including a bye week, by sporting a ferocious defense that sacked Gators quarterback Kory Curtis six times and held Island Coast to minus-34 yards of offense.

The Tigers blew double-digit leads in both losses, including a 17-0 lead to Lely where they fell behind the 8-ball in the District 5A-12 title race.

“It’s been a while,” Brown said. “They really paid attention to details tonight. And there was no second-half letdown. “

Dunbar was up 28-0 by halftime after two Jairus Johnson touchdown passes to Kenny Benjamin and Shanon Reid as well as a Lajuan Preston rushing touchdown and a 77-yard Shocky Jacques Louis punt return for a score.

Preston finished with 135 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns, the last coming on a 60-yard scamper in the third quarter to force a 35-point lead and a running clock.

Island Coast (0-7), which has already clinched the worst record in school history, managed just two first downs. The Gators return to District 6A-10 play when they host city rival Cape Coral next week.

Dunbar begins a stretch of three straight district games next week against Cypress Lake.

“We’re just going to take it one game at a time,” Brown said. “If we lose, we’re done.”
