A lightning-fast defense highlighted a lightning-delayed game as East Lee County struck down Estero 14-6 Friday night in a District 6A-11 matchup.
The Jaguars defense was the difference with Markinson Charles bringing pressure all night on Wildcat quarterback Philip Setterqiuist, including two big sacks and a tipped pass in the second half.
The game got off to a sloppy start, sloppier than the rain soaked field, with special teams miscues on both sides.
A fumbled punt snap gave Estero the ball at the Jaguar 24-yard line. Setterquist took quick advantage with a 22-yard touchdown toss to Willie Neal early in the second quarter.
Estero then fumbled a punt snap on its next possession and despite some miscues of its own, East Lee took advantage.
Lothario Adderly ripped off a 67-yard touchdown run, part of his 159 yards of rushing on the night. Then quarterback Cortavius Lee handled a bad extra-point snap to run it in for two.
“We’ve waited four years for this,” said Jaguars head coach Dave Smith of his first win in district play. “It just shows that you’ve got to keep working it and working it and working it. You don’t quit when you get knocked down you get back up.”
The ball was on the Jaguars’ side of the field most of the second half, but the quarterback sacks by Charles along with a key fumble recovery by linebacker Brandon Williams helped secure the victory.
The capper came when a worn down Estero defense surrendered a 34-yard Darien Staco touchdown run with 4:06 left in the game.
Even then Estero took the ball twice in the last two minutes deep inside Jaguars territory only to see two passes intercepted, one as time ran out.
The game was as messy as the field with East Lee fumbling eight times, losing three and Estero fumbling four times, losing it once.
East Lee County improved to 2-3 and 1-0 in the district, while Estero falls to 1-4, 0-1.
