Khory Spruill, who missed much of last season with a broken leg, had two touchdowns. He put the Stags (1-0) up 14-0 with a 9-yard run in the first quarter. He also had a 38-yard touchdown run late in the game.

English made it 21-0 just before the end of the first quarter on a 41-yard run.

With three minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers (0-1) got their first score for new coach Bill Dee as Jahmeek Jones ran it in from the 1-yard line, following a 53-yard pass play from Shon Mitchell to Khalik Perry.

English scored from the 1-yard line in the third quarter to put the Stags up 28-7. The Stags’ final touchdown came on an 8-yard run by Carlton Taylor.

DeMatha next plays on Friday at home against Avalon (Gaithersburg, Md.) while Oscar Smith travels to Nansemond River (Suffolk, Va.) on Friday.

Oscar Smith was 13-1 last season. Dee replaced Richard Morgan. DeMatha was 11-1 and won its third consecutive WCAC title.
