One of Enka’s best all-around athletes is narrowing his sporting focus for the next level.
Michael Cantrell signed to play college football for Mars Hill University on Tuesday afternoon in the Jets’ media center.
Cantrell has been a Citizen-Times All-WNC athlete in two sports this school year (football and wrestling).
He played varsity football for three years and is expected to be either a slot receiver or safety for Mars Hill. Cantrell was the only All-Mountain Athletic Conference football selection for the Jets (1-10) last year after rushing for 1,422 yards and 15 touchdowns. He made 12 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown.
“I couldn’t have gotten this far without coaches and everyone around me pushing me,” Cantrell said.
“I got to watch (Mars Hill) a few times and really feel like it’s a place that suits me. I’m going to miss (wrestling) a whole lot. I could feel it from the beginning of the season that we had a team that could win a state championship. And it was such a great moment for us because we were such a team.”
