Meet the Battle Creek Enquirer Athletes of the Week. Here you can vote for your favorite athlete until Wednesday at 5 p.m., with the top vote-getter receiving an ‘Athlete of the Week’ T-shirt.

Simply put, Battle Creek has never had a female cross country runner better than Maggie Farrell.

The Lakeview senior is drawing interest from Big Ten Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference programs thanks to an impressive start to her season. Her winning time of 17 minutes, 36.6 seconds at the Lakeview Invitational on Sept. 10 is the second best in the state this fall regardless of class, according to athletic.net. The time is also a school record and is believed to be a city record for a 5K. On Sept. 7, she won her first individual All-City title in 17:59 – also believed to be a record for the meet. Her efforts this past week also helped the Spartans win team titles at the All-City Meet and the Lakeview Invitational.

Chase Austin

Chase Austin

Opposing teams are having trouble keeping Chase Austin in front of them – and equal trouble stopping his shot from reaching the back of the net.

Austin has emerged as a potent offensive threat in his junior campaign for the Pennfield boys soccer team, recording a team-high 14 goals to date. He’s also scored in bunches, recording hat tricks against Quincy, Comstock and Olivet. He recorded a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over Vicksburg on Sept. 6, followed by the Panthers’ lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Kalamazoo Christian on Sept. 8.

Jasmine Wellet

Jasmine Wellet

Jasmine Wellet stands at 5-foot-6, but packs quite a punch for the Coldwater volleyball team.

The three-year varsity member and outside hitter has led Coldwater to a 13-3-2 start this season. Using her 27-inch vertical, she leads the team in both kills (95) and blocks (18) through 41 sets played. In her most recent match, she displayed her versatility with a team-best five kills and eight digs in a three-set sweep of Fremont.
