If that baseball thing doesn’t work out, Bubba Thompson might be pretty good at football.

Thompson, an Auburn baseball commit and quarterback for No. 5 McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.), threw three first-half touchdown passes to lead the Yellowjackets to a 42-13 defeat of Fairhope on Friday.

He’s led his team to a 10-0 regular-season finish and thrown 30 touchdown passes. Southeastern Conference football coaches are starting to notice. Tennessee offered on Oct. 17, telling him they would let him play both sports. Ole Miss did the same two days ago.

All of Thompson’s touchdown tosses Friday were big gainers, including a 41-yarder to Brian Hill, a 55-yard pass play to Jalen Tolbert and a 20-yarder to Brandon Hinton.

The Yellowjackets also came up big on special teams. Bryceson Massey blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown. Hill returned a punt 40 yards, following that with a 4-yard run for a touchdown.

McGill-Toolen opens the 7A playoffs next Friday when it is expected to play host to Jeff Davis (Montgomery). It was the last game of the season for Fairhope (2-8).
