When the Briarcliff and Putnam Valley field hockey teams met during the regular season the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

So while Briarcliff was seeded seventh and the visiting Tigers 10th, Bears coach Lindsay Zekus wasn’t taking anything for granted Saturday during their Class C first-round game.

That was a good thing as the Bears edged the Tigers 2-1 to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal against No. 2 Croton.

Teresa Marinaccio had a goal and assisted on Devon Litchfield’s goal.

Lauren Turner had a strong game for Putnam Valley with 12 saves.

But she and her team might have caught a break early in the second half when an apparent Briarcliff goal was waved off.

Zekus said video proves one of her players deflected a shot in off a penalty corner but the official didn’t see a Bear deflect it and called it a no-goal, since the ball had come from outside the scoring circle.

“That could have been really bad,” Zekus said, especially after the Tigers’ Cyera Daughtry scored soon after.

But Briarcliff hung on with goalie Jess Garlasco credited with five saves.

Briarcliff lost to Croton 4-1 earlier this season but Zekus believes her team, which was minus players due to illness and injury at that game, will be better Tuesday.

“Hopefully, it’s a totally different game,” she said.

Pearl River 1, Brewster 1 (Pearl River wins 3-1 in shootout): In a Class B first-round game at No. 8 Pearl River, Elizabeth Gilbride, Breanne Dophin and Annie Dolan scored in their 10-second, 1-vs.goalie shootouts that followed a 1-1 regulation tie and two scoreless 10-minute, 7-on-7 overtime periods. Sarah McNamee scored for Pearl River during regulation.  Brianna Sayegh scored in her shootout for No. 9 Brewster and Grace Pastore had the Bears’ regulation goal.

Kerry Gettler had 15 saves for Pearl River and Samantha Anfuso stopped 10 shots for Brewster.

Pearl River will play at No. 1 Lakeland Wednesday in the Class B quarterfinals.

John Jay-Cross River 2, Nanuet 0: In a Class B first-round game played at No. 6 John Jay, Anna Prusko had a goal and an assist and Rosie Ceisler also scored. Jenna Franchino had eight saves for No. 11 Nanuet. Hayley Martinsen had six saves for John Jay, which will play in the Class B quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 3 Somers.

Pelham 3, Harrison 0: In a first-round Class B game played at Pelham, Lindsay McNamara had a 13-save shutout, Samantha Cucciniello had a goal and an assist, and Jenna Letizia and Ashlynn Mustafa also scored. Nellie Fisher had six saves for No. 10 Harrison.

No. 7 Pelham will play in the Class B quarterfinals Wednesday at No. 2 Rye.
