Consider this a battle of cousins.
Last year, DeShawn Smith from Nature Coast (Brooksville, Fla.) set a county record by rushing for 444 yards in game.
Cousin De’Vonta had his eyes on doing something more. The state’s leading rusher, he ran for 488 yards on 23 carries to lead Central (Brooksville) to a 63-28 victory against Weeki Wache. He also scored eight touchdowns to equal the county mark.
“We knew about the touchdown record but we didn’t know about the rushing record,” Central coach Chris Sands told TampaBay.com. “When he got eight (touchdowns) we pulled him out. It was the right thing to do. It seemed like every time he touched the ball he was gone. He’s such a luxury to have.”
DeShawn, though, seems likely to have finished with the better total after running for 3,715 yards last season in 13 games, including playoffs. De’Vonta is on pace for 2,543 at the end of the regular season.
