GEORGETOWN, Ind.— Floyd Central used a 17-0 run in the first half to seize control on its way to a 68-50 win over visiting Scottsburg Thursday night.

Sophia Gianfagna, a sophomore guard, paced the Highlanders with 22 points, drilling five shots from beyond the three-point arc. CJ Clark, a senior, added 15 points.

The Highlanders (3-1) built a 17-point cushion midway through the second quarter before Scottsburg’s Paige Barrett scored a flurry of points to cut the deficit.

“I’m thrilled with the way we’re playing,” Floyd Central coach Kirk Hamsley said. “Our press is getting better. Our intensity is getting better. I’m really happy with the way we’re playing. Last year, we played hard but we just didn’t hit shots.”

Barrett, a 5-10 senior who has signed her letter of intent to play at Murray State, caught fire and scored 14 of her 19 first-half points in the second quarter as the Warriorettes (2-1) pulled to within 30-27 with 1:27 left in the second quarter. Floyd Central led at the half 34-27.

In the third quarter the Highlanders again pushed out their lead, thanks to a 14-2 run. Floyd Central’s Grace Hale converted a layup with 3:48 left in the third quarter and the Highlanders led 48-30.

“(Gianfagna) hit some big threes and that really helped,” Hamsley. “That gives us an inside and outside threat.”

From there, the Warriorettes never got closer than within 15 points the rest of the way.

Barrett was held to just six points in the second half and finished with 25 points on the night.

“I thought she got a little tired in the third and quarters quarters,” Hamsley said of Barrett. “She wasn’t as active. We were trying to front her and keep the ball away from her.”

Hamsley said he’s still trying to get the best out of this year’s team.

“If we come together, we could be pretty good,” he said. “We could be competitive. We’re got a lot to learn. We’ve got to get through the grind of the season.”
