GRAND RAPIDS – Traveling up to Grand Rapids in hopes to survive and advance in the MHSAA football playoffs, Lakeview was unable to keep up with the high-powered passing attack of Forest Hills Central as the Spartans fell to the Rangers, 52-7, in a Division 2 district semifinal in football action on Friday.
After trailing early in the game, Lakeview moved the ball down the field and capped off their drive with a Jay’Vion Settles touchdown carry from a yard out on fourth-and-goal to tie the game at 7-7.
Momentum wasn’t in Lakeview’s favor for long as Forest Hills Central took advantage of a good kick return and then scored on a double-reverse from 20 yards out. On the very next play for the Lakeview offense, Forest Hills Central recovered a fumble and would add another touchdown to make it 21-7 early in the second quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, after a Lakeview punt, Forest Hills Central went 99 yards on four plays for a touchdown and extended its lead, 28-7. After another Lakeview fumble, the Rangers added to their lead with a goal-line touchdown rush, making the score 35-7 at halftime.
Forest Hills Central started off the second half right where they left off as they scored from 31yards out making it 42-7 to put the game away.
Settles finished the game with 65 rushing yards on 13 carries while Lakeview quarterback Josiah Kitchen ended the game with 39 yards on the ground.
“That’s a good football team, they beat us in every phase of the game. But I am proud of our senior’s career,” Lakeview coach Matthew Miller said,, who saw 22 seniors play in their final game.
Lakeview finishes the season at 6-3 while Forest Hills Central will play Portage Central.
