A former Wilson Central (Lebanon, Tenn.) High School softball coach and math teacher was arrested Thursday evening on charges of statutory rape by an authority figure, according to Wilson County Sheriff’s office records.
He was picked up under a sealed indictment from his home, Wilson County Sheriff spokesperson Sharon Flair said.
Michael Shepard, 36, was fired as from his position of Lady Wildcats softball coach and also suspended as a teacher at the school about two weeks ago while the Wilson County Schools human resources department conducted an investigation.
Wilson Central won the Class AAA state championship in 2015 under Shepard.
At the time, Wilson Central principal Travis Mayfield declined to say why Shepard was fired or under investigation.
Shepard has served as the softball coach and a math teacher for the last seven years.
