Former Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus High boys’ basketball coach Danny Henderson, who won four state titles during his 25-year tenure at the high school level, will join new Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood’s staff, according to the Idaho Statesman.
Henderson led Marcus to the 2011 and 2012 Class 5A state championships, with the help of former Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart and current Cowboys guard Phil Forte. Now a second-year player on the Boston Celtics, Smart would be a senior at Oklahoma State had he not declared for the NBA draft following his sophomore season in Stillwater.
In a quarter-century of Texas prep coaching service at Liberty Hill, Weatherford Peaster, Marcus and Duncanville, Henderson won 80 percent of his nearly 900 games, compiling a remarkable 708-172 record. He also led Peaster to Class 2A state titles in 1999 and 2000.
Henderson spent one season at Duncanville between coaching Smart and Forte to back-to-back titles at Marcus and joining the Boise State staff as an assistant under Leon Rice in 2013. Boise State assistant Jeff Linder was the first Division I coach to recruit Forte.
Henderson brings a defensive mindset and strong Dallas-area recruiting ties to the table.
