The Fossil Ridge baseball team used a big fifth inning to come from behind and defeat Scottsdale (Ariz.) Christian Academy 10-3 on Monday in Arizona.
The SaberCats trailed 3-1 entering the top of the fifth inning when their bats finally came to life. The inning started with Nic Gidley being issued a walk to open the frame. He’d advance to third on an error during the following at-bat when a ball hit by Ryan Sipes couldn’t be fielded cleanly. That’s when the runs started to pour in, bringing nine home in the inning.
Ryan Cronin, Dante Randolph and Jake Grillo recorded RBIs during their first at-bats in the fifth inning. The second time through the lineup, Cronin, who went 3 for 5 on the day with three RBIs on the day, knocked in another run. Sipes and Gidley also drove runners home their second time up.
Cronin was the only Fossil Ridge player to record an extra-base hit.
Ryan Smith struck out six batters in three innings on the mound for Fossil Ridge (1-1). Andrew Low and Calvin Marley struck out three apiece in relief work.
Fossil Ridge did not commit an error.
