The Fossil Ridge High School softball team is advancing to the final four of the Class 5A state tournament.
The underheralded and young No. 12-seeded SaberCats (19-5) beat Dakota Ridge and Loveland during Friday’s first day of state tournament play in Aurora, setting up a 10 a.m. semifinals game Saturday against No. 1 seed Broomfield.
The winner of that game plays the winner of Eaglecrest-Cherokee Trail for the 5A state championship at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Aurora Sports Park.
Against Dakota Ridge, the SaberCats scored two runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and win the game, 5-3. Hayley Henderson went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, while pitcher Landyn Bruce went 2 for 4 with a solo home run, two runs scored and a double.
Fossil Ridge beat Loveland 6-3 in the quarterfinals, again on the strength of Bruce’s pitching (and two RBIs) and Henderson’s two RBIs. Grace Philop also went 2 for 3 with a run scored, while Kristen Reed went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
FORT COLLINS ELIMINATED — The Lambkins’ run in the 5A state playoffs ends in the quarterfinals. The Lambkins beat Legend 5-3 in the state tournament opener, thanks to a two-run home run by Cedar Bennett in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Fort Collins, however, lost in the quarterfinals, 5-2 to Eaglecrest. Fort Collins (15-8) outhit Eaglecrest seven to six, but Eaglecrest pitcher Braelyn Crenshaw was able to work her way out of jams, finishing with seven strikeouts. Jennifer Dudash and Ciana Curran each had an RBI for the Lambkins.
