Every great idea has to start somewhere. Maybe Lamont Wade is the genesis of the next one.
Wade, a four-star cornerback who will be making his college commitment Saturday night, announced via Twitter that he will hold a party shortly thereafter to celebrate his early graduation and his college choice. It starts at 10 p.m. The cover charge will be $3. We’re all invited. Based on the proposed location, it doesn’t seem like 10,000 people are going to fit, though there’s a pretty good sized spill-over yard there.
Here’s the aforementioned announcement:
Yes, you read that correctly. A high school senior is throwing a commitment after party with a cover charge. At 10 p.m. on a Saturday. What a time to be alive.
USA TODAY High School Sports reached out to Wade for more specifics via direct message. He responded with the time of his commitment, and the following statement:
“It’s something kids from where I’m from always do, nothing special,” Wade said. “It just happens to be after I commit.”
Clearly the big draw for the shindig is Wade himself, who will be hanging with his people, or those who might like to become part of his people, for a few hours. We don’t know if there will be a D.J. We don’t know if there will be cake. Maybe there will be punch and pie. Everyone who comes will be excited to meet Wade and may be satisfied, or not. But they’ll definitely leave $3 lighter in the wallet.
Is Wade the first top prospect to throw a commitment after party? We don’t know. He’s certainly the first we’ve come across, and definitely the first to add a cover charge (yes, we’re going out on a limb with that proclamation, but it feels like a pretty safe limb). That said, don’t hate on the innovator. Hate the cover charge, not the brand-focused sports entrepreneur-in-training.
